The fundamental principals adopted about the environment:
To use the latest environmentally friendly technologies,
To maximise recycling,
To minimise the usage of natural resources
To protect the ecological system by minimising waste disposal to soil, air and water,
To improve environmental consciousness and performance.

Originating from the idea of removing the elements causing the ecological imbalance instead of restoration of the environment, ERDEMIR is giving priority to the usage of highly developed technologies with almost zero waste. The second important approach is to provide the usage of wastes as raw materials in either ERDEMIR's own production process or in other industrial facilities and thus preventing the negative impact resulting from the disposal of wastes to air, soil or water.

Within the frame of the CIM Project realized with this approach, refining and re-usage of waste water in production, the purification of chimney gas emission and their usage as fuel gasses and the usage of dust gathered in production and disposal of waste materials in proper methods is provided.

As a result of these investments, 23% increase in energy saving compared to 1987, 75-95 % improvement in dust and gas emissions, 86% regain in water consumption and 47% decrease in the level of chemical oxygen requirement which is an indicator of pollution in wastewater is recorded. The waste materials resulting from production are regained by 74% by selling or re-utilized in sinter process. Besides, 62% of the total fuel requirement is regained by using the purified chimney gas and other by-products as fuel.

.550 junks of roll had been used in the BOF after refraction and 616 billion TL saved. 16.3 trillion added value is saved by regaining of 300.040 tons of skal and separation junk from tumbling and sifting facilities. The first Radioactive Material Detector of our country has been assembled and put to service in front of the existing scale in the Old Harbour which is the entrance for junk to ERDEMIR, in order to protect human health and to prevent radioactive pollution in the facilities, in 1999. In addition to all these investments, studies regarding recreation facilities as well as landscaping and a forestation on 40.000 hectare-field, within the dam region near Guluc River have also been performed.

In 1997, Redeemer was awarded by Ministry of Environment for its environmental friendly studies and also in 1999, it was awarded with "Environmental Friendly Award" by Environment Technologies Implementers Association for its respectful studies to environment and community. Also, awarded with "Golden Package Award" in 1999 Package Contest organized by TSE Package Research and Development Centre and "World Star Award" in 1999 International Package Contest organized by World Package Organization (WPO). In order to make these activities more systematic, it was decided to establish Environmental Management System in 13-01-1999. The documentation studies for ISO 14001 Environmental Management System are the indicators of Erdemir's efforts and determination for taking the necessary precautions and for continuous development of environmental performance.

Within this framework, main principles of Erdemir's Environmental Policy are as follows:

In accordance with the concept of Sustainable Development, and following technical, economic and commercial evaluation, to protect our natural resources and use raw materials in the most efficient and productive way and apply technology which reduces to the minimum the waste discharged into the environment.

To apply all the laws and directives related to the environment and contribute to the development of standards for areas which are not still covered by laws and directives.

To develop an infrastructure which is continually controlling, monitoring and defining environmental parameters in order to eliminate environmental risk.

To use infrastructure to always examine and improve all of our processes in order to reduce wastes and protect our natural resources.

To develop and support the re-cycling of energy and raw materials.

To establish open communications on the issue of the environment with all of our social partners, workforce, customers, suppliers, the society in which we live and the state, and to provide information and raise awareness of ERDEMIR's attitude towards the environment, its applications and results.

In the light of the identified environmental targets and goals, to apply an environmental management system complying with the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standards and to develop, and ensure the continuity of, all of our environmental activities within its framework.
